Statement of the Artist, Beverly Joslyn --

I was born in 1949, in Bemidji, Minnesota, the closest town with a hospital from Cass Lake, where my parents, Joe and Elizabeth Lausche, lived. I grew up and went to school in Cass Lake, a much smaller town on a lake surrounded by tall forests and the headquarters of the Chippewa tribe. It was known as a ‘mixed’ reservation because there was both private land and Indian land in the area. I started drawing when I was eight years old. My love of horses made that subject my first try. In my teen years I started drawing the students in my class. The Cass Lake School system had no art department and offered no art courses , so I taught myself. After graduation from high school in 1967, I  married and started a family.

In 1975, my sister gave me a set of oils, and that launched my career in painting. My first subjects were the Native Americans living in my area. I entered art shows and displayed my paintings in the local shops. In 1980, my husband, Bill Joslyn, our son and I moved to New Mexico and I became especially interested in painting wildlife, and also began to do commissioned work for clients in the United States and Canada. These included portraits of American Indians and historic sites.

We moved back to Minnesota in 1996 where we now live on a small lake, Welsh Lake, which sits between Cass Lake and Walker, Minnesota, off Highway 371.  I try to paint almost full-time now, mostly nature and Indian scenes with special commissions in other areas whenever I can fit them in.  My goal is to share with others my love of nature and the North American Indian heritage through my art.

My studio is in my home on Welsh Lake. We operate the Joslyn Art Gallery on the premises to display my work to visitors who choose to venture out into our Minnesota lake country with its tall pines and nesting eagles. In the gallery, I have a dozen or so originals on display at any one time, as well as limited edition prints and canvas transfers for sale. On-site, we also have a frame shop to do custom framing for our customers.
